Historical Background

The building is listed in the State Register of Immovable Monuments of Ukraine as an architectural monument of local significance. The front building of the branch was built in 1804 and originally housed the Hotel d'Europe, one of the oldest hotels in Lviv. Over the years, the building has undergone several reconstructions and has served various purposes, including a hotel, a bookstore, and a bank. In 2006, the building was converted into the central office of Ukreximbank.

The hotel's original building in the first years after its opening had only one floor. In 1826, the hotel changed ownership. The new owner of the Hotel d'Europe, Karol Mate, initiated its reconstruction, after which the building had two floors (the ground floor and the first floor). Since 1847, lithographs have already mentioned the hotel's four-story structure.

In the 1870s, when the next reconstruction of the hotel took place, it already had new owners, the Alzner family. It was then that the building was decorated in the Neo-Renaissance style. During this period, in addition to the hotel, the building also housed a bookstore, and a printing house run by Franciszek Richter, which published popular Lviv newspapers such as Kurier Lvivski and Strikha. In 1877-1887, the building's attic also housed Edward Trzemewski's photo studio, later owned by Karol Roszkewicz and Ludwik Wieleżyński. In 1895, the hotel was purchased by restaurateur Albert Szkowron. A restaurant hall was constructed in the backyard at the same time, following a project by Z. Sułkowski.

In 1920, the premises, together with the hotel, were bought by famous Lviv tradesman Antoni Uwiera. In 1934-1936, by order of the new owner, architect Ferdinand Kassler constructed a new building for the hotel. In 1949, the name “European” was changed to “Ukraine”. In 2006, the central office of Ukreximbank was opened in the building, which was converted in the style of Austrian classicism in the 60s and 70s of the XIX century.
